My daughter’s spring break this year was the same time as my niece’s, so my sister and I decided to travel to Japan together. Since my parents live in Hong Kong, they also joined us in Japan. We visited Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka together. It was a lot of people and a lot of fun!
Traveling with family means we get to have help to watch our kids!! We don’t get this luxury often as we live hundreds and thousands of miles away from our extended family members. My parents graciously watched the girls for a couple of hours on a Sunday morning when my husband I went to visit Sensoji, so that I could sketch!! Haha.
We went to Senso-ji before 9 when it was still relatively quiet. Late March in Tokyo was crowded as it’s the Sakura (Cherry Blossom) season. We walked around the Temple area, and found a spot I would not block people and could sit for a while to sketch the Main Hall.
I sketched for about half an hour while my husband walked around Temple ground. A few people came up to look at the sketch. Some of them said something to me, and I assumed that was something good because I didn’t understand what he said. He didn’t look mad!
Here’s what I came up with. I loved the temple colors. The red and gold were glamorous. It looks similar to a Chinese temple but the details were a little bit different.
I also sketched at other places during our Japan trip. Look at my other pieces here:
