I love “Goo Low Meat,” aka sweet and sour pork in the western world. I love the Hong Kong style one, the one with pineapple, colorful peppers, cripsy fried pork with a thickened glaze of orange (not red!) sauce. (Not the Panda Express one, but I would say Panda Express’s orange chicken is pretty good in its own category.)
Whenever we try out a new Cantonese style restaurant, we would order sweet and sour pork to see if the restaurant is authentic Hong Kong style. We have lived in Utah, Michigan and California, and we have tried a lot! We have found the one we love the most, and we also have one that will forever be the worst on our list.
The best one we have had, with the best flavor with reasonable price is E.A.T. Bistro in Rosemead. Just the right amount of sauce, not runny, not too thick. (掛汁) The pork is cripsy on the outside and just right on the inside. Generous amount of pineapples, peppers and onion. We discovered this restaurant during the Pandemic, when they were delivering meals to the South Bay area.

Most of the other Hong Kong style restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley also serve pretty good Goolo Meat, but we have always come back to E.A.T. Bistro because their other dishes are also very good and with big portion. Our friends’ parents from Hong Kong said it’s better than some of the restaurants back home!
The worst, absolutely worst “sweet and sour pork” we have had was in a small town in Michigan. In fact, it was the first restaurant we visited in Michigan. We looked for a Chinese restaurant and found this to have good reviews. It was located in a rather ghetto area where our tire caps got stolen. !!! That sweet and sour pork was some fried dough with some runny red sauce. You can’t even tell it’s pork!
